From the Jeff Hurt Blog: 'Three Conference Speaker Processes that Will Alarm You'

Jeff Hurt just posted a great blog, 'Three Conference Speaker Processes that Will Alarm You'--which brings up some great take aways regarding who makes the final decision when hiring a professional speaker for an event.
What's even more interesting is the finding in the linked The Speaker Report: The Use Of Professional And Industry Speakers In The Meetings Market... an indepth look at the speaking industry from how organizations get ideas for whom to hire to how many of those looking for a speaker use a speaker's bureau.

Interestingly enough:

'The size of the professional speaker budgets also appears correlated with the perceived value of speaker bureaus. Only 4.8 percent of organizations with professional speaker budgets of $5,000 to $20,000 find bureaus extremely valuable versus an impressive 34.4 percent of organizations with budgets over $100,000.'

Why not utilize a speaker bureau who can help negotiate costs and recommend speakers to get the most out of your event?

Futurist Jack Uldrich's Predictions for 2012

Jack Uldrich is a renowned global futurist, independent scholar, sought-after business speaker, and best selling author. His books include the best-selling, The Next Big Thing is Really Small: How Nanotechnology Will Change the Future of Your Business, and the award-winning books, Into the Unknown: Leadership Lessons from Lewis & Clark’s Daring Westward Expedition.

He takes an interesting look as a futurist into what's in store for 2012 in his Predictions for 2012 on his Jump the Curve blog.

From Blackout Friday (facial recognition for retailers), free college classes for the unemployed, and politically charged apps, he thankfully doesn't predict the world will end.

The most interesting of the predictions are virtual grocery stores (which have already been seen in Asia) but will pop up in DC later this year and phone food sensors (developed by two Purdue students) which is an app that detects the type and level of chemicals used on fresh produce.

What's your prediction for 2012?

Tom Flick Hallmark Testimonial

Tom Flick recently presented at the Hallmark Finance Leadership Forum--the event theme was "Call to Courage" and Tom was the closing speaker for the all-day event. Tom's speech was, 'far and away', and according to the folks at Hallmark, the favorite among attendees.

Tim Griffith, CFO of Hallmark Cards, had nothing but wonderful things to say about Tom's speech:

'His messages around leadership and playing to win encourage the kind of introspection that can change future results.  Without reservation, I would recommend Tom to other organizations who want to energize their talent and build stronger leaders.'

Congratulations, Tom on a job well done!

Tom has a new book in the works that we can't wait to read,  and Tom addresses over 100,000 men and women each year on high performance strategies for leadership, teamwork, change, and personal growth. His passion for raising more effective leaders is achieved by his unique gift to connect with the listener’s heart as well as their head.

TED Speaks: Brene Brown, 'The Power of Vulneribility'

Love this speech by Brene Brown, who studies human connection -- our ability to empathize, belong, love. In this very poignant and albeit hilarious speech at TEDxHouston, she shares a deep insight from her research, one that sent her on a personal quest to know herself as well as to understand humanity. A  talk to share.

Brown is a research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. She has spent the past ten years studying vulnerability, courage, authenticity, and shame. She spent the first five years of her decade-long study focusing on shame and empathy, and is now using that work to explore a concept that she calls 'Wholeheartedness'.

When Speaking to a Group, Are You in Control?

Thought this was a great read by the Assessment Business Center blog--'Are You in Control When You Speak to a Group?'. I thought it warranted great tips for those who are both professional speakers and those who's professional speaking career was the toast they gave at their brothers wedding..and everyone in between.

The article makes some great points--that you're never to good to ignore the fundamentals of good speaking, whether you've made 50 speeches for 50,000.

Audiences these days are used to 'slick media' and are harsh critics when it comes to marginal presentations.

What do you do to keep it fresh?

This week in London, internationally acclaimed executive educator, coach and author, Dr. Marshall Goldsmith, was named winner of the 2011 Thinkers50 Leadership Award – as the World’s Most Influential Leadership Thinker.  Along with being recognized as the #1 Leadership Thinker, Marshall was ranked #7 on the list of the world’s Top 50 Business Thinkers.

"Marshall Goldsmith is singularly persuasive, networked, and energetic. In the crowded leadership sphere, he is fixed on changing the practice of leaders for the better rather than the neatness of his theories," said Thinkers50 co-founder Stuart Crainer.

Chip Bell: Texas Sized Showcase Mingling

Rounding out our showcase was the ever charismatic Chip Bell--who, if you remember, made us giggle with glee and LOL this summer on one of our weekly speaker calls.  With a heart as big as Texas and a Texas sized accent, the FIVE STAR team couldn't wait to meet him in person.

Bell worked the crowd during our showcase lunch break, mingling with our clients and chit chatting about the day. I thought that was very representative of how he would be at a speaking engagement--hands on.

Most recently, The Chip Bell Group  was ranked number 14 in the North American category of Independent Consultants/Trainers/Coaches in their Leadership 500 ranking. The Leadership 500 is an annual ranking of the best individuals, teams, and organizations in leadership development practices and employee motivation-productivity.

His latest book, Wired and Dangerous: How Your Customers Have Changed and What to Do About It', with John R. Patterson, is currently on the Inc. Magazine top 25 best-selling books list. It is also the #1 best-selling customer service book on Amazon.com.

When asked what made him stand out from other keynotes, he replied 'I have fun with the audience, I'm engaging and well prepared...and I'm darn good looking!'. Chip also says his favorite group to speak to is 'the after lunch time group', which alludes to his enthusiasm and energy level.

Ever have a great idea shot down that you knew would make a difference? We all have.
From Microsoft's take on the smart phone (that it would never take off) and that Japanese automakers
would fail in the US market, to overnight parcel delivery not being feasible and copiers not being useful, sometimes we have to take our ideas to the next level.

Check out these predictions from Am Ex Open Forum.

Gregg Gregory : Showcase Speaker Profile

We had the pleasure of meeting Gregg Gregory at our November Showcase, as he told the story of his poor dog, Hollywood, his untimely death, and the heartwarming story that surrounded it. Gregg has developed three programs designed to improve the culture of any organization from a culture of medirocity, to a culture of can do, and greatness. Face-to-Face vs. Virtual Events: The Essential Stats and What You Need to Know...
    via the Jeff Hurt Blog!

Tim Gabrielson: The Magic of Inspirational Comedy

Tim Gabrielson is just plain funny. Period. From his facial expressions to pulling a showcase attendees $100 bill out of a tomato, Gabrielson woke up the after lunch crowd with 20 minutes of non-stop laughter.
A winning entertainment experience is hard to gauge...some say it's by applause, others by audience interaction. Regardless of the measurement, inspirational Keynote speaker and comic magician Tim Gabrielson takes his audience on a captivating adventure every time he steps on stage.

Using quick wit, interactive magic and a playful spirit to connect with his audience, Tim focuses on his underlying theme of "keeping it funny" and helps audiences choose to live positively, as he takes them on his comedic journey. He masterfully weaves his uplifting message throughout his presentation and leaves the audience thoroughly entertained, enlivened, and inspired.

Recent testimonials from Carlson Companies who said, "Tim Gabrielson is all you need to make your event a huge success" and Jostens who exclaimed, "Our Conference was a success the minute Tim took the stage" are true testaments of how great Tim is in person.

Ross Bernstein: Showcase Speaker and Our BFF

We had the opportunity to hang with Ross Bernstein at our showcase amid wine, some interesting taquitos and some fun impersonations by staff and speaker alike.
Not only is is Ross super nice and pretty much the marketing department's BFF, but we found out he got bumped from a hockey team spot after walking on with much enthusiasm at the University of Minnesota, went on to be the actual Golden Gopher, then wrote an amazing 50 books on sports and is a best selling author.

Ross' program at the showcase was content rich, full of practical takeaways, and overall it's very visually engaging and entertaining.

We also found out his best selling book, ;The Champion's Code: Life Lessons of Values & Integrity From the Sports World to the Business World', is a hit with Canadians!

Patty Duke Speaker Testimonials and More!

Patty Duke, Academy Award winning actress, past President of the Screen Actors Guild, and best selling author, has been delighting and challenging audiences for more than 40 years with her work in movies and on television.

Duke is  not only an actress and  author: “A Brilliant Madness: Living with Manic Depressive Illness” she is an advocate for mental health awareness and bipolar disorder, alcohol recovery, people with disabilities, child abuse prevention, adoption, suicide prevention, aging, women’s health, the arts, and much more.

Here are some testimonials from the last few weeks:

'Patty Duke was excellent, she received a standing ovation from the crowd of 2,000. She also stayed for a couple of hours after her talk to greet every person who wanted to meet her.

Thanks again for all of your help, both Patty and Mike were wonderful to work with and very gracious.'

    -Peggy

'Patty was fantastic! Thank you so much for working with me to make our event happen. Just as you promised, Patty hugged people, signed autographs and posed for photos. She delivered a wonderful speech that was very funny, but also very serious and warm. She took questions from the audience. She gave interviews to our local media. We sold out our event (they could fit 475 in our venue and that's what we had.) And, her presence in town really brought our agency into the public eye. Her husband, Mike, is also wonderful to know and was quite helpful in escorting Patty and handling the crowd. What a nice couple. We thoroughly enjoyed having them here. Thank you so much--the event was literally, a smashing success!!'
    -Anne

Does Swag Work? Tips to Score with Simple Promo Products.

I love a good swag bag--actually, I love giving a good swag bag and hopefully if you were at our FIVE STAR showcase last week, you were the lucky recipient of one.

An interesting article by Fast Company says that: 'This year, the U.S. promotional products industry is estimated to be a $17.4 billion market. To put that figure in perspective, American wineries have annual revenues of $14 billion, breakfast cereal manufacturers have revenues of $12 billion, and movie ticket sales are about $10 billion. Americans will spend more on swag this year than they do on amusement parks and arcades, more than on dry cleaning, more than on coffee shops including Starbucks and Peet’s.'

From what to put your logo on to product and placement, see why swag makes sense here:

    Showcase Speaker Profile: Mike Rayburn

One of the FIVE STAR showcase highlights was that of Mike Rayburn, who, with his guitar and hilarious takes on Taylor Swift to sing-alongs to 'Philipe is not a dad' had the whole showcase laughing from start to finish.

Rayburn is a three-time Carnegie Hall headliner, Las Vegas headliner, a member of the Speakers Hall of Fame, and the Speakers Roundtable. In his award-winning keynote, "What If...?" Mike uses amazing guitar and hilarious comedy (instead of power point!), to teach the three tools that took him from playing for seven people in a bar in Virginia, to Carnegie Hall. They work for anyone, in any career, always. Mike gladly tailors his message to your needs and the theme of your conference. This is how you get to YOUR Carnegie Hall.

Mike is available for engagements for your organization. For information regarding his fees and availability, contact the FIVE STAR team.

    Showcase Speaker Profile: Cary Hall

Vietnam veteran, heath insurance expert and nationally syndicated talk show host Cary Hall is next in line for our 2011 Kansas City Speakers Showcase!!!

As a family man, a veteran and a hard working entrepreneur, Cary's passion and vision is to keep America strong by protecting and improving our national free market system, particularly in the health insurance industry. That is achieved by truly meeting the needs of families and small businesses and strongly opposing government run national health care programs. Cary does both.

Today, as the President of Benefits by Design and host of the Health Insurance Advocate Show heard on Missouri and Kansas radio stations, Cary is leading a charge to educate and empower Americans to take control of an essential aspect of their lives... health and financial protection within the commercial sphere - and just as important, avoid a government run train wreck known as national health care. How? By making you, the consumer, aware of your affordable options.

    Showcase Speaker Profile: Jonathan Edison

Our FIVE STAR Speaker Showcase is right around the corner, have you signed up yet? Tickets are selling out fast-- sign up now... http://kc2011showcase.eventbrite.com/ !!!

Up next in the lineup is Jonathan Edison--M.Ed., a talented teacher and motivator with the proven ability to inspire. Using a combination of life experiences, education and old-fashioned high-wattage charisma, Jonathan empowers his audiences with success-centered strategies that not only help them through difficult times, but rebound to even greater heights.

Jonathan knows what it takes to bounce back from adversity. Born into poverty in Detroit--Jonathan's mother was removed from their home due to drug and alcohol dependency at the age of five. Three years later his father moved out. He was raised by his grandmother until she passed away when Jonathan was only 13. His high school years were spent living in the basement of his aunt's house, working full-time as a dishwasher at a restaurant so he could pay $50 a month in rent. Not surprisingly, he graduated from high school with a GPA of 1.63 and completed his first year of college with a GPA of only 0.86 before dropping out.

With the odds stacked against him, instead of submitting to failure Jonathan found the strength, determination and resiliency to rise above his circumstances. Caring mentors helped him realize he was worthy of success and he went on to complete four college degrees in Education and Leadership Supervision.

His most popular topics include 'How to Stay Motivated in Challenging Time', 'Tough Times Don't Last', 'Tough People Do', 'Change Makes Cents', and It Takes Teamwork to Make the Dream Work.

See him live at our speaker showcase on November 3rd at Bacchanalia!

Up at Bat: World Series sized Speakers..

Ahh October baseball, the favorite of many. While the Cards take on the Rangers in the 2011 World Series, you can't help but look back at some of America's baseball greats..who just happen to be amazing motivational speakers.

Jim 'The Rookie' Morris-who made a promise to the high school team that he coached that he would try out for Major League Baseball if his team won the District Championship, just happened to sign a professional contract with the Devil Rays organization at the age of 35.  While the subject of the award winning Disney film 'The Rookie', Jim is an accomplished speaker who is particularly good at weaving the needs of his customers into his presentation and works hard to please his customers. He receives standing ovations wherever he goes.

A school teacher by trade, Jim is a lovable storyteller who captivates and inspires others to step up and change their lives. His signature program, 'Never Give Up on a Dream', inspires those about second chances in life and overcoming obstacles.

More on Jim can be found here.

Jim Abbott, is a former Major League Baseball pitcher, who played despite having been born without a right hand. He played for the California Angels, the New York Yankees, the Chicago White Sox, and the Milwaukee Brewers from 1989 to 1999.

Those who have hired Jim Abbott to speak will tell you what a truly motivational keynote speaker he is. His style of speaking is humble and humorous. He shows your audience, employees or members of your association how to overcome obstacles and difficulty. He is a living example that disability does not define you, but rather your ability.

Motivational speakers can lift and inspire your team. Those who are a living example of overcoming adversity, like Jim Abbott, are the best at bringing the message into the hearts of the listener. His messages use many sports anecdotes, but is 100% appreciated and loved by even those who are not sports fans.
