FIVE STAR Director of Marketing, Sarah 'the Whit' Whitten  and I headed to Bachanalia, our official Speakers Showcase event space,  yesterday, and amid the delicious smells of freshly baked bread, tomato sauce and the mention of cannoli... we couldn't have been more excited.

The event is really starting to come together. We also headed over (like 4 parking spaces) to the Fairfield Inn, where we were made even more hungry by their lobby offering of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies (I won't tell you how many Sarah ate). I'd stay there ALONE for their cookies...and their newly revamped rooms!!!

Steve Jobs pretty much turned Apple products into devices no one can live without in a matter of 10 years (with the intro of the iPod in 2001).  Right now, I'm writing on my iMac, I've got my iPad in my lap and my iPhone is a mere thumbs length away.

Sadly, Jobs announced his retirement yesterday--after posting a 900% return on Apple stock in his tenure.

Steven S. Little, 'The Ignorant Outsider'

Steven Little stopped in the FIVE STAR offices yesterday from his Midwestern road trip for a little lunch (thank you, Wil Jenny's Chardonnay chicken was fabulosity) and a lot of learn.

While we devoured asparagus spears and mac and cheese, we learned the author of such best-selling books “The Milkshake Moment: Overcoming Stupid Systems, Pointless Policies and Muddled Management to Realize Real Growth”  and "Duck and (re)Cover: The Embattled Business Owners Guide to Survival and Growth" approaches organizations that he speaks to as a self-described 'Ignorant Outsider'. 

When you're working at an environment everyday, you get used to what's going on around you and it might take an 'outsider' with no preconceived notions of the business to give you the view from outside the box.  He's found that many organizations have 'a-ha' moments when he points out some obvious issues that they may not have thought about, which leads them to growth strategies and innovation.

Steven said in today's business environment in which 'boom and bust is the norm', organizations not only need to return to fundamentals, but must focus on training, their people, and innovation.

Mashable: Twitter to Join FB and RIM for Riot Talks With UK Government

It's no doubt that social media has taken the world by storm...some good and some unfortunately bad.
Twitter confirmed that it will 'happily listen' and attend a meeting with UK officials to discuss the role Twitter and other social media outlets had in last months

It became apparent that rioters were using social media as a means to coordinate violence, both quickly and to reach a greater audience. Which..is...actually...pretty smart.

The UK is asking if convicted rioters should be banned from using social media.

Forbes: World's Highest Paid Authors Due to E-Savvy Readers

Forbes posted a great article yesterday--how the extremely lucrative e-reader market is giving the adult hardcover segment a run for their money. While hardcovers are seeing a serious sales revenue decline, author's like Stephanie Meyer (Twilight), and James Patterson (Witch & Wizard, etc.), have been savvy in branding themselves. They've quickly entered into multimedia deals that are targeted towards the e-reader market... young adults...and people who still consider themselves young adults...heck yeah I read Twilight!

Is the end of the real book over?  Is it truly easier and more convenient to use a Kindle? Will Barnes and Noble still exist in 10 years?

Chad Hymas Inducted into 2011 NSA

Chad Hymas, was inducted into the National Speakers Association (NSA) Speakers Hall of Fame on August 3rd in Anaheim, California.  NSA has a total membership of just over 4000 internationally-recognized speakers, authors, trainers and consultants.

Hymas, 37, is the youngest ever to have been presented this coveted award.

Chad never wanted to be a “professional speaker but  dreamed to be an elk rancher. However, Chad was injured 10 years ago, when a 2000 pound bale of hay fell on his head and rendered him a quadriplegic.

A chance meeting of speaker Art Berg a few months prior to Chad's accident by his dad and step-mom led to a life changing experience for Chad.  Kelly brought a video of Art Berg’s “The Impossible Just Takes A Little Longer” to the hospital for Chad to watch and it would change his life forever.

Google to Buy Motorola Mobility

In an upward trend in the ever changing mobile market, Google announced yesterday that they will buy Motorola Mobility--a huge opportunity for Google in the mobile space.

The $12.5 billion dollar deal is not only Google's largest purchase and a huge gamble, but sets them to gain a new arsenal in the patent world battle against such giants as Apple and Oracle.

NSA Awards Cavett to W. Mitchell

Last night the NSA awarded motivational keynote and W Mitchell with their highest honor, the Cavett Award. Named after co-founder, Cavett Robert, It is presented annually to the member whose accomplishments over the years have reflected outstanding credit, respect, honor and admiration in the Association and the speaking profession, and whose actions (in terms of sharing, guiding and inspiring other members) most closely parallel the illustrious career of Mr. Robert.

In addition to the Cavett, CPAE's (Council of Peers Award for Excellence - Speaker Hall of Fame)
were awarded to Mike Rayburn, Dan Thurmon, Barbara Glanz, Victoria Labalme, and Chad Hymas.

From Mashable: Mastercard Rewards Uses FB Checkin's in New Campaign

The old Yankee Stadium was laid to rest in 2010, but much of the old stadium was salvaged (I've even seen cuff links made from the seat cushions).

Many of the seats have survived and according to Mashable:

'Twenty such seats will be scattered around New York City starting Monday. Fans who find the seats and scan a QR Code will be checked in to Facebook Places. Once a fan checks in, they make themselves eligible to win VIP tickets to a 2011 Yankee game in MasterCard’s exclusive Batter’s Eye Café.'

How technocool is that?
